What is the difference
between building a piano and
rebuilding a piano? |
Rebuilding a piano is
not the same as building a
piano.
Building a piano entails the
total construction of a
piano from scratch from the
raw materials available
according to a set of plans
that the piano manufacturer
draws up. Manufacturers
employ piano engineers who
play a crucial and central
role conception and design process.
As an examples, see an
excerpt from the Mason and
Hamlin Factory Brochure.

see Mason and Hamlin.pdf
Rebuilding a piano is
usually not performed by the
original piano manufacturer,
though Steinway has in the
past and in the present, has
done some rebuilding of
their older previously
manufactured pianos.
Rebuilding or
Remanufacturing a piano is
done in a piano rebuilding
facility by a piano
technician who specializes
in rebuilding. The most
comprehensive rebuilding job
begins as a starting point
with the original rim, beam
understructure and plate and
action frame.
I have had a Master Piano
Rebuilder, Chris Robinson in Connecticut
rebuild a Steinway O for my
customer. The piano had been
sitting on its side for 15
years in a synagogue and was
missing it legs, pedal lyra,
lid and fallboard.
All the cabinet parts at to
be reconstructed and
replaced where necessary.
The core of rebuilding
entails replacement of the
soundboard, pin block,
strings, tuning pins, action
parts and more.
Then there
are more partial rebuilding
projects that only involve
replacement of the pin
block, strings, etc.
