Bosendorfer Piano; Design and Construction

What makes a Bosendorfer a Bosendorfer and why is it so expensive?

Bosendorfer Is manufactured from Finest Materials. What is the process?
  • The wood and felt that is rejected for the highest quality pianos would be used in most of the other pianos manufactured.
  • Naturally dried wood: Wood is air dried naturally for 2-5 years (depending on thickness); rather than forced to dry quickly in a kiln which damages pores and decreases acoustic properties.
  • This takes a large capital investment in materials.
  • Large climate controlled rooms in the factory to store all woods after being machined and cut.
  • Cast iron plate is sand cast which is a much more expensive process.
  •  Plate is set outside to cure for several months before being used. This releases internal stresses that might produce warpage in the future.
  • Agraffes with stainless steel pin give more consistent termination, provide easier tuning, and last longer.
  • "T" nuts to mount pin block for added strength and stability.

Workmanship

  • Workmanship: (time & experience)
